Letter from Martha Mattes
The purpose of educational concerts, including the Tiny Tots concert, is to introduce children of all ages to symphonic music performed by a professional symphony orchestra. When I was a child in Chicago I regularly attended educational concerts presented by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. I attribute my decision to pursue a symphonic music career, in large part, to the wonderful experiences I had hearing the Chicago Symphony Orchestra perform at Orchestra Hall.
I’m sure Candy Band is very good, and I’m sure they are very entertaining. They are not what I would consider educational, and they do nothing to introduce children to professional symphonic music. It seems to me that presenting Candy Band minus the professional musicians of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra amounts to mission drift. The DSO is turning into a presenting organization as opposed to enriching the Detroit metro area through the professioanl services of the musicians of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.
I urge you to resolve the work stoppage with your musicians as expeditiously as possible, in a manner which leaves intact the professionalism and high artistic standards which have been hallmarks of the DSO for generations. The people of Detroit deserve no less.
